Steel cutting operations not only consume steel, It also consumes electricity, cutting discs, and working hours — and the last two are easy to overlook because they are rarely tracked as separate line items.
Abrasive cutting removes metal by grinding it away. The disc wears down as it works, so every cut consumes part of a disc, and the process generates considerable heat and noise. At low volume the cost is not obvious. At production volume it becomes visible in the consumables budget and on the electricity bill.
The disc is the most visible expense. Because an abrasive disc wears during cutting, each cut removes part of it, and over a month of production that quantity becomes significant.
The larger cost, however, is time. A worn disc has to be replaced mid-job. The operator stops the cut, waits for the spindle to stop, fits a new disc, and starts again. Each change takes only a few minutes, but the changes repeat throughout every shift.
A toothed blade works on a different principle. Rather than grinding through the steel, it cuts it, removing chips instead of wearing itself down. HOPRIO's J1G-355YE2 uses a 355mm (14") toothed blade of this type, and the machine at 50% less abrasive disc consumption.
A power rating only matters if the power is still available when the blade meets resistance. When a brushed motor loses speed under load, the blade slows, heat builds in the cut, and cut quality declines.
The J1G-355YE2 uses a permanent-magnet brushless motor with a rated power of 3000W and a maximum of 5000W, driving a no-load speed of 3600 RPM. HOPRIO describes the machine as providing the cutting power of two conventional machines, and rates the brushless motor at 30,000 hours of service life.
Two further figures affect running costs. HOPRIO Steel Cutting Saw at 25% faster cutting cycles and a 40% reduction in power usage. In continuous production, both change the cost per cut.
A production cutting area subjects equipment to constant vibration, abrasive chips, and a power supply that is not always stable.
The J1G-355YE2 addresses these conditions with a thickened steel base that holds the workpiece steady and reduces vibration, keeping cuts consistent across long production runs. The machine tolerates a wide voltage range, so supply fluctuations do not translate into inaccurate cuts. Over-temperature, overload, and over-current protection are built in, allowing the machine to shut down before damage occurs.
The machine cuts rebar and deformed bar, solid steel bar, tube and hollow section, channel steel, angle iron, and brass.
HOPRIO designs and manufactures brushless motors, controllers, and tools in-house. Because the motor and controller are developed together rather than sourced from separate suppliers, the protection thresholds and speed control on the J1G-355YE2 are configured for this specific machine rather than inherited from general defaults. The company holds 265+ patents and employs 100+ R&D engineers, began developing AC brushless tools in 2015, and has been exporting since 2019.

In high-volume cutting, the purchase price is not the same as the operating cost. A brushless cutting saw reduces cost per cut through lower disc consumption, lower power usage, and the absence of brush maintenance, while maintaining a consistent cutting rate throughout a shift. For a service center that measures output per shift, those are the figures that determine the return.
